Sony Announces PlayStation 6 for Holiday 2027 With a Record-Breaking Launch Lineup
Sony Interactive Entertainment held a surprise showcase revealing not just the console specs, but a launch lineup that includes sequels to God of War, Horizon, and a new IP.
Sony's surprise PlayStation Showcase ended with a video package that nobody in the industry was expecting on a Tuesday afternoon in April: a full reveal of the PlayStation 6, including its design, hardware specifications, price point, and launch lineup.
The PS6 is a bold-looking console — sleeker than the PS5's divisive design, with a matte black finish and a small transparent strip along the center that houses an ambient light system. It's smaller than the PS5 by roughly 30%, which Sony attributed to advances in chip fabrication.
On the hardware side: a custom AMD GPU delivering approximately 28 TFLOPS of performance, 24GB of GDDR7 unified memory, and an NVMe SSD with sequential read speeds of 22GB/s. Ray tracing is handled by dedicated hardware that Sony claims is 'a generational leap' over the PS5's implementation.
The launch lineup is extraordinary by any historical standard. God of War: Twilight, Horizon: Zero Dawn III, a new IP from Naughty Dog called Fracture, and Gran Turismo 8 are all confirmed day-one titles. Three third-party titles round out the lineup.
Price: $599 standard, $699 with a 4K Blu-ray drive. Pre-orders open May 15th. Holiday 2027 launch globally.
